Vintage

One of my dearest friends, Amy, was romantically proposed to this past New Years Eve (swoon!). There's mention of a vintage affair and I'm already bursting with excitement. Don't you love the idea of a wedding that recalls memories (real or imagined depending on your birth year) of yesteryear? I know I do.

Best wishes and happy planning, Amy and Rhett! xo

Party

I'm off to do some last minute grocery shopping for a mini dinner party ce soir! This helps temper my party planning desires. Images via Style At Home and The Guardian.

Supper

I love dinner parties and am excited to get moving on a party we're planning later this month with a Sunday Suppers-inspired menu plan and decor inspired by Ashley Meaders. Image via Sunday Suppers.

20x200

I've written about this fantastic site before and my love continues! To thank our beautiful friends for their support as our wedding party this past May, we selected a print for each friend that we felt matched their personalities - it was a hard task and I hope we succeeded. Our selections are above.

For friends reading, I'm keen to propose a little game: any guesses on which pictures above match which attendant?

My current favourite? Try Letting Go.

Dressing

The shots of this dressing room from this backyard wedding make me excited to spend time getting ready with my ladies on the morning of our wedding. We've got plans for a pancake brunch, inspired by this soiree, a salon appointment (I'm dreaming of a hairstyle along the lines of this bride... though for other wedding events I'm aiming to be able to style my own hair more along these lines) and then hopefully (I am on a quest to find a makeup artist at this point) a beauty consultation that sees me departing for the church with lush lashes like these (one can hope, no?). MaryBeth

This past weekend, Greg and I travelled to Toronto to celebrate the marriage of our dear friends MaryBeth (affectionately known as MB) and Adam (ahem Peter Adam... I mean Pierro Adamo). They're a heartachingly-lovely couple who match each other with their sweet demeanour. I couldn't think any more highly of them if I tried. They'll have a tender and compassionate life together - this is a certainty to me.

I've known MB since our days on Collingwood Street in Kingston. We were fast friends. We wore almost identical coats. We taught each other economics and statistics. We made pasta dinners together. People referred to us as twins sometimes (which I not-so-secretly loved). She and Adam were in love then, and his frequent trips to Kingston from Richmond Hill meant I had a ride to the large fancy grocery store every few weekends... needless to say, Adam was easy to like. I was ecstatic when he asked for her hand in marriage last March.

MB is a dear friend, and her wedding was Style Me Pretty fabulous. From the lavish location, to the centrepieces, to the extensive menu (think an antipasto bar.... chased by a pasta course... chased by chicken AND fillet mignon... chased by family-style passed desserts such as cheesecake lollipops and chocolate dipped strawberries... chased by cupcakes... chased by a crepe bar... chased by... wait for it... poutine served in mini Chinese take-away containers), the navy and soft pink affair was entirely them and was entirely delightful.

Did I mention that the bride was stunning? Like mouth-on-the-floor stunning? Yep, she was.

I had a fantastic time welcoming in the new Mr. and Mrs. Fazzari with our other dear friends Cheryl and Amy and Matt and his fiance Jen. Weekends away are fantastic and we should take them more often (particularly when they involve shopping sprees and delicious Turkish tapas). Cheryl, thank you for sharing your home with us. You're a fantastic host. Sisters, thank you once again for a memorable weekend and birthday celebration. I love you all and cannot wait to see you again soon. Photos via Cheryl and Greg.

Apple

Over lunch today, a friend who I too infrequently see, Karen, shared a great company for work and play dresses. I am looking forward to adding a few frocks for the office and our honeymoon! These dresses scream romance in London and Paris (at least to me). Images via Shabby Apple. Thanks for sharing, Karen!

NYE

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2010! In the coming year, I look forward to sharing my take on DIY projects for our wedding, our adventures into honeymoon planning (to London and Paris... this week!) and my forays into the world of cooking with lemons and limes (the subject of a recently gifted cook book). As Greg and I ring in the new year with friends over fondue this evening, I'll be thinking about all the projects ahead. Image via ckck.

Baking

This past week I made my first chocolate cheesecake* (previously I'd only baked blueberry, raspberry and passion fruit varieties). Complete with a graham crumb and cocoa bottom (I think I'll add a little cinnamon to it next time as well), the delight was a baked combination of cream cheese and dark chocolate. The source of this inspiration was a recent present - The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook. We happily shared the cake with good friends of ours over a delicious dinner on Friday evening; such meals are a clear example of the good life.

This past week Greg's mom was also visiting from Vancouver. While debriefing on the cheesecake, she shared with me two of her secret kitchen ingredients - mascarpone cheese and creme fraiche. I am intrigued to try mascarpone in my next batch of icing, and creme fraiche instead of whipped cream/yogurt/sour cream to garnish my next bowl of tomato soup.

Coincidentally, the chef, Ivan Kyutukchiev, who will be preparing our reception dinner this coming May, used mascarpone cheese in snatching his gold plate win at the St. John's installment of the Gold Metal Plates. Good luck Ivan on competing to win the Canadian Culinary Championships in Vancouver later this month.

* Said cake could not have been prepared without the help (in collecting ingredients and otherwise) of Greg and his mom.

Bridesmaids

I'm intrigued by the option of selecting a colour and intensity, say medium to dark blues, for the bridesmaids' dresses and then asking each lady to select her own dress that broadly fits that description. Perhaps they might even be able to find a dress that they already own to fit the bill. These dresses from BCBG Max Azria make me seriously consider the idea. Don't you think they look great together? I enjoy the idea of showcasing separate personalities, and matching colour and fit to each woman's body type.

November 21 update: Today, after a second afternoon of scouting dresses in our wedding colour of choice, we walked away with three distinct dresses in hues ranging from eggplant to violet. The ladies look beautiful!

Folly

During Christmas of 2007, I discovered Tangled Up in Blue - an Australian bistro on Bates Hill in St. John's. It was instant love and the cafe became the de facto place to catch up with friends on a birthday or random weekend (including playing host to my 24th birthday). While living in Alberta, a friend mentioned that Tangled had closed. I was quite saddened. Thankfully the place underwent a metamorphosis and reemerged as Folly on Bates, a late night restaurant operating between 6 pm and 6 am most evenings. Happily, Greg and I will be joining friends there tonight for a friend's birthday (Happy Birthday Amanda!). I'm looking forward to checking out their new menu!

Pendants

In thinking about the appropriate height to hang photos and having just purchased a Nelson bubble lamp, I've now turned my mind to the appropriate height for a light fixture to hang above a dining room table.

My research suggests somewhere between 30 and 40 inches above the table. Does anyone have any conventional wisdom to share, beyond holding up the light fixture above the table and lowering it until it looks just right? We're hoping to create an intimate dining space to host a few friends. I'm also thinking a dimmer switch is a must have. Thoughts? Image via Ninainvorm.

Chocolate

Besides beef and Banff National Park, Alberta is famous for its Bernard Callebaut chocolate. Before moving here, work colleagues of mine extolled its virtues. I had high expectations upon settling in Edmonton, which were thankfully met.

Like my arrival in Edmonton, my departure finds me pondering chocolate. In concluding things at my current position, in typical fashion I've spent some time chatting with colleagues and saying our farewells. One such conversation led to a discussion on the perfect number of people to invite to a party. Greg and I hosted a large party last March, but now I'm thinking 8 people is just perfect.

One pitfall to a small party, as articulated by my co-worker, is that the food expectations are heightened. With eight guests, people are less likely to be satisfied with pre-made burgers on a grill, coleslaw and a slab cake. With eight guests, people are looking for a glimpse into your cooking style and prowess.

Greg and I cook simply. We eat lots of soup, tomato and cucumber salads, grilled shrimp, stir frys and pasta. We enjoy cooking together (most of the time), but our sense of adventure in the kitchen wanes when work is hectic and our plates are filled with other endeavours. I occasionally get into a mood where I want to try new recipes. I collect the new ingredients from the supermarket (hello largely unused jar of turmeric) and try my hand at whipping up a new concoction. This whim has led to citrus salmon fillets, peanut soup and coconut shrimp. Sadly, I haven't been experimenting in the kitchen for a while.

In thinking about what sorts of meals might impress, my co-worker mentioned a chocolate party that she'd been invited to not long ago. I immediately thought chocolate fondue, brownies, creme de cacau; an adult take on a dessert party. However, my initial assumption was mistaken. Her friend's party included four proper courses that each included chocolate; think replacing chocolate fondue with chicken mole. Doesn't it sound like fun? I am getting excited at the prospect of mirroring this dinner party.

All this thinking about chocolate is making me want to watch Chocolat again. Image of upscale s'mores via Ulterior Epicure.

Artichoke

I think global artichokes are beautiful and enjoy artichoke asiago dip. For a great dip recipe see here. My friend Cheryl recommends scooping the dip up with oilve oil brushed, toasted pita and salt.

For a mid-century modern take on the artichoke, check out Poul Henningsen's 1958 Artichoke Lamp.

Sisters

Last weekend, Greg and I hosted my (now our) lovely friends MaryBeth and Cheryl. While temperatures were low, it was fantastic to catch up with those two. There were so many things to catch up on - starting soccer teams, navigating newish jobs and office politics, getting engaged (congratulations MaryBeth and Adam), drafting spring shopping must have lists and sharing favourite recipes. Our apartment has never been filled with as much laughter before.

We spent Friday evening chatting and eating (a common theme throughout the weekend) at Joey Tomato's on Jasper. Saturday involved wandering the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market, shopping at Edmonton South Common (there's a great new Banana Republic there), and making a yummy Italian dinner (we're still recovering from the calories). Sunday was a West Edmonton Mall shopping extravaganza (Club Monaco has the cutest headbands for sale now - check them out!).

A big thank you to the ladies for the lovely birthday presents (I am happy my birthday has extended for more than a month this year...). I have used the monogramed green notebook to write a summer garden shopping list. The ingredients for the recipes you shared have made it to this week's shopping list. And we will continue to enjoy playing Scattergories.

Here's to good friends, good times and future reunions (March 27th 2010 anyone?).

Visitors

This weekend Greg and I will be hosting two of my great friends (and sisters) Cheryl and MaryBeth from Toronto. They're fantastic ladies who I had the pleasure of meeting while studying at Queen's School of Policy Studies a few years back. We bonded over memorandums to cabinet, briefing notes and statistics assignments. We ate ice cream on Wolfe Island. Some of us tried to make it to Washington D.C., but ended up on a bus in a snowstorm outside Scranton, PA. Others of us went dancing at Menage in Toronto. We held many parties at Amy's place on Ontario Street. We've been making trips across the country to keep in touch ever since.

This visit is part two of the 'MPA sisters come to Edmonton', as the third - Amy - was here just last month from Fredericton. To you all, thank you for coming to visit me in my new home in Edmonton!

Sunglasses

I must apologize to my friend Amy for the sour weather in Edmonton yesterday. While it is normally sunny every day, the clouds decided to come out for her visit. However, we pushed aside the slushy, grey day and maximized our fun, if speedy, visit. In true unfortunate fashion, the sun is out and bright today though. These rays are a reminder that I'd like to purchase a new pair of sunglasses. I'm thinking a retro throw back with Ray Ban wayfers might be fun? The suitability to my face shape remains to be determined!

Speaking of retro, give this older song a listen or this one. I love 90s alternative rock!
