Vintage

One of my dearest friends, Amy, was romantically proposed to this past New Years Eve (swoon!). There's mention of a vintage affair and I'm already bursting with excitement. Don't you love the idea of a wedding that recalls memories (real or imagined depending on your birth year) of yesteryear? I know I do.

Best wishes and happy planning, Amy and Rhett! xo

Bicycles

I'm planning on dreaming tonight of riding a bicycle with a basket to Belbin's Grocery to purchase sun-dried tomato baguettes to sop up big bowls of carrot and coriander soup. Yum! Images via I am A Greedy Girl and Happenstance.

Picnic

Greg and I have a simple go-to dinner that often chases a heavy lunch - a coffee table picnic.

Yesterday afternoon, we were running about big box land collecting lots of paper in various shades of plum, violet, grape and mauve to begin creating the paper concept for our wedding (my current projects include menus and programs). The skies were dropping buckets of rain and we decided (rather, Greg offered) to grab lunch at The Narrows. We cuddled in the corner booth and enjoyed a stacked high burger complete with a pickle (for him) and a swiss cheese and portobello mushroom pita (for me) with a side of salty fries! Yum.

After indulging midday, it seemed fitting to look to a lighter meal in the pm. As the hunger pangs hit around 7 pm, my mind turned immediately to our favourite coffee table picnics. We turn on a fun TV show, set the table with colourful place mats, and serve tomatoes topped with fresh pepper and sea salt, ripe strawberries, a sliced baguette with bread and balsamic vinaigrette (for dipping) and slices of aged cheddar. To wash down these simple delights, we pour a pair of high glasses of orange and cranberry juice.

In 2010, thus far, I've been relishing the simple pleasures. Coffee table picnics are a certain simple pleasure. The image above is our living room - the beloved venue of our coffee table picnics.

Secret

Over dinner last night, Greg and I came to agree that Jerry Maguire, the movie not the man, got it right. When you truly love someone, you love them for the person they want to be and the person they almost are. Image via Le Love.

Talent

Fake it 'til you make it; truer words have yet to be uttered as regards my creative abilities. I wasn't born with perfect pitch or poetic vigour. However, I have tried my hand at tap dancing, painting, singing, theatre, violin and ballet. With such a string of ventures (many short-lived), one could come to the conclusion that I give up too easily (and they'd be half right).

While I do feel pangs of jealously when I see others create in ways that seems to be effortless from the outside, I think the most cathartic way for me to release creative energy is through the written word. I don't linger for long with the green eyed monster. While I've enjoyed the other pursuits, I don't feel empty without their accomplishments and embellishments.

This love affair with words began a long time ago. As a child I wrote poetry and preferred to play with books over dolls. In the midst of my teenage angst, I dabbled in online journalism and wrote a short story that to this day I reflect upon fondly. In my university years, I wrote a bi-weekly newspaper column. For a long time I missed that writing, and in fact, many days I still do. Thinking about words (and even fonts) excites me. Thankfully writing, albeit not of the creative bent, is a major component of my current profession.

Greg and I chatted about creative energy on our road trip. We were exposed to poets, actors, musicians and potters. The joy that stretched across their faces when talking about their art was infectious. It got us to thinking about our own energies. In thinking back on that side-by-side chat on a hazy Saturday evening, I write this post as a commitment to myself to delve into writing more thoroughly. I'm sitting at a juncture in my life right now, and I'd like to use my pen more frequently in this next chapter. I'm venturing forward with the intention to write another short story. We shall see where this pursuit takes me. I think this is one of those truck stops.

P.S. I haven't given up on ballet, and hope to continue in the fall.

Poster VIII

It's been awhile, so I thought it fitting to post a new uplifting poster. I enjoy the use of a pants hanger for a frame; what a great option when you've got an irregular sized piece of art and splurging for a custom frame isn't in your budget. Poster for sale at Hijirik.

Couch

We're having one of those lazy-in-front-of-the-tv-watching-B-movies-and-eating-ice-cream evenings. It's the perfect chaser to reading in bed in the morning and milling about Old Strathcona on a hot afternoon. Happy Saturday!

Post-Its

Romy pretended to have invented them on Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, the Project Runway Canada designers made dresses out of them for charity auction last season, and one of my former employers prohibited their use - I'm talking about Post-Its. Post-Its are displayed all around our home. Greg and I use them to write messages to each other when we're travelling for work. It's become a fun tradition to write messages to each other and post the notes throughout our apartment so that the other can find them while we're away.

This author in Singapore places one Post-it note of 'Things We Forget' throughout the city every day. The random messages help spread sunshine and positive reminders to those who stumble upon them. These are messages of how to best live your life; check it out. I know I often need these reminders.

Mountains

A long weekend in the fantastic Jasper National Park requires no wordy recap; instead, here is our photo diary of Victoria Day Weekend 2009.

Jasper

Greg and I are off early tomorrow morning on an impromptu road trip to Jasper for the long weekend. We debated tents and backpacks and coolers and Coleman stoves; the low temps and possible flurries made a hotel more attractive. A fire ban banished dreams of teaching Greg to love marshmallows. We'll have a fantastic time nonetheless relaxing at the hot springs, drinking in the mountain air, taking day hikes and eating delicious dinners.

Merry wishes for a happy and safe long weekend.

Anywhere

Feeling a little 'kd lang's Anywhere But Here', my mind is drifting to getaways, and new adventures and possibilities that exist beyond my current place. I need to reinvigorate my soul.

If I could be anywhere but here, I wouldn't mind being:
  • On a sail boat wearing horizontal stripes on the Caribbean
  • At the Manukubra Ranch participating in cooking glasses
  • Seated at a desk writing short stories while eating peppermint sticks
  • On the beach in Dubai meeting Greg's twin brother and his wife
  • Exposed to new tastes and smells in Greece and Turkey on a culinary tour
  • With my whole extended family laughing around a campfire after a delicious cook up
  • Creative by making fun film videos on Super 8 like these
  • In the United Kingdom on a Rothermere Fellowship

Poster I

There are so many fun inspirational, and beautiful, design posters out there. Think - 'Keep Calm and Carry On'. Though it might be too design blog cliche for some, Greg and I have a sunny yellow one hanging in our living room. I've decided to seek beautiful and interesting posters out and post them here on a regular basis. It is important to keep life positive!

I had French fries with my birthday dinner last night (not to mention yummy gyoza with hot mustard and sesame soy sauce): for me, the right French fries with the right seasoning are a source of happiness.

Poster available at Studio Mela.

Speaking of positive vibes, give this song a listen. Singing along is sure to put a smile on my face. Who doesn't love a mohair suit? No need to answer that one!
