Our Playroom: The Reveal

At long last, we put the finishing touches on Thomas' playroom yesterday afternoon. Our timing couldn't have been any more perfect because he's just started actually crawling. I feel so fortunate to have a space dedicated to play for our little man, and it's a stress reliever knowing the room is baby proof (or at least so I think!).

Breakfast in Bed

Now that our social life revolves more around enjoying simple pleasures at home, the idea of breakfast in bed has such appeal. Wouldn't these trays from Huset make the perfect assistant to serve your sweet a glass of juice and plate of fruit and pancakes in bed?

Anticipation

With our playroom waiting on a few postal deliveries before completion, I'm in the anticipation phase. I'm imagining all the fun we'll have in that room playing with a car mat, drawing pictures and playing on the floor with wooden blocks.

Playroom Inspiration

Kenzie's playroom is one of my favourites! I've been looking back at these images that I saved in my inspiration folder last summer as we prepare to dip brush in paint and transform our basement into Thomas' play space this weekend.

Composition of a Family Home

Our house is really starting to feel like a family home with onesies hanging on our laundry rack, a high chair at the head of our dining table and toys strewn on our living room rug. I love it.

Rugs

We have hardwood (new on the main, original on the third floor) and laminate (in the basement) so rugs are a necessity in our home. As Thomas starts to crawl we want to make sure his little knees and elbows are protected, so I've been thinking about increasing the amount of square footage in our home that's clothed in rugs. Aren't these Turkish rugs beautiful? Found via Little Green Notebook.

Q: Will your children share a room?

I grew up with my own bedroom, but my little brother often slept in my room with me. We'd stay up late secretly listening to my mom chat on the phone or talking to each other. I knew friends who shared a room with a same-sex sibling though, which I thought (probably until my mid-teens) would be a lot of fun.

We presently have a three bedroom house, and use one of those rooms as a tv den (I adore retiring upstairs in the evening to our private family space, and being able to nap in bed and overhear Greg and Thomas playing next door in the den in the early mornings). If we have a second child and still live in our present home, we debate moving ourselves into the tiny nursery and giving our kids our master bedroom (which would have plenty of space for two single beds, dressers and play space). What are your sleeping arrangements?

Makeover

Every day Thomas and I take naps in our queen size bed. I also am 99.9% of the time in bed by 8:30 pm each night. This amounts to a lot of time in our (inherited) baby blue bedroom. I'm (meaning as of today) consumed with wanting to give our master bedroom a makeover. I want it to be eclectic and cozy. I'd like to mount one of the above photos of Vancouver above our bed.

How to: Stock a Bar

With the holidays sadly behind us, chances are your bar cart has taken a hit and might require replenishing. Though pre-Christmas liquor store runs might include heavy helpings of coffee liqueurs and Texas Mickeys of your family's favourite spirits, maintaining an entertainer's bar for the rest of the year requires a little more consideration as the type of occasion and guest you'll be enjoying and hosting will likely vary.

At our home, we keep a range of popular drinks and our own favourites. While it's always gracious to serve someones favourite drink to them (hence why we always stock up on gin and tonic when a certain friend of ours visits), it's also fun to introduce a guest to a new cocktail while in your home (hence why I always keep Chambord on our bar stand and a bottle of Limoncello in our fridge). To do this, it's important to know what's popular and to decide on a few signature cocktails to serve in your home. If you tend to host the same people over and over, make sure to switch up your signature cocktails every season and learn a few different drinks from the same spirits. As I'm no expert mixologist, I undertook a little research expedition to determine how to keep a showstopping bar.

For a well stocked bar cart keep:
  • Wine - I recommend keeping a few of your favourite bottles and then supplementing to match the food you'll be serving on a case by case basis
  • Classics for highballs - vodka, gin, and dark and light rum
  • Other common liquors in cocktails - bourbon, brandy, scotch, tequila and Canadian and rye whiskey
  • A few liqueurs - Amaretto, Irish Cream, Creme de Cacao or Coffee Liqueur (I don't feel you need all three), Vermouth and orange liqueur
  • Mixes - We're one of those families that keeps multiple types of juice on all hand at all times so if you're like us you might not need to supplement for highballs, but you might want to buy a bottle each of sour mix, bitters, lime juice and grenadine. Orange, cranberry, tomato and pineapple are all great juices to pick up before a big function to have a very impressive bar.
  • Sodas - I recommend buying a few tins each of tonic water, club soda, lemon soda, cola and ginger ale. They'll ensure you can make just about any highball your guest might desire. We prefer tins to larger bottles for space reasons and also because we rarely drink these beverages solo in our house.
  • Garnishes - Ideally you keep plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables on hand for snacks and cooking anyway, so you can simply steal an orange, lemon, celery stalk or olive from your kitchen to garnish your selections.
In addition to these bottles and perishables, you'll want a cocktail shaker (or two), a hawthorne strainer, ice bucket, blender, a wine decanter, cutting board, paring knife, bottle opener, corkscrew, red and white wine glasses, champagne flutes, highball glasses (tall and stout), and martini glasses. In my opinion, all other glasses and tools are nice additions, but not essential.

Do you agree? What are your essentials? What's your favourite cocktail?

Navy

Hmm, maybe we should paint our kitchen a deep navy? This kitchen is gorgeous! Image via NY Magazine.

P.S. The Horizontal Stripes 2011 Gift Guide will pick up again on Monday with guides for foodie friends, romantic friends, dads, mother in laws, sister in laws, babies, toddlers and brother in laws. I spent today actually shopping for the people I love. xo

Playroom II

I'm getting cold feet about cladding a wall in the playroom in wallpaper. Instead, maybe a collection of twoems abstract prints would provide sufficient visual interest and colour?

We're also thinking of placing a davenport in the room to double as a place to watch movies, hold sleepovers and host guests. In terms of specifics, I'm loving this couch and this one too.

Playroom

Our guest room is going to go through a metamorphosis in the coming months from cozy rest place for visiting family to a play space for our boy (we'll move the guest space to our present third floor den). Right now I'm in the inspiration gathering stage. I want to include a child sized table and chairs set, fun wallpaper, and a rotating art display place (plus lots of storage and white walls). We'd also like to keep things as green as possible by purchasing recyclable cardboard large toys such as this play hut, where possible, though I have to admit I'm feeling tempted to purchase this play kitchen (which is presently available at a floor model discount from a local shop). I know Thomas won't be ready to play with the kitchen for awhile, but some of my happiest memories are playing with my toy kitchen as a child. Plus Erzi makes the most amazing wooden play food. Speaking of play kitchens, Kids on Roof also has a fantastic cardboard version. Plan Toys table and chairs via Baby Naturopathics, city wall paper via Studio Nommo and art work line via Ikea.

Nursery

If curious, here's a glimpse of the room we designed for little Thomas. As a nursing mother, with a son who feeds best in his poang chair, I'm quite glad we took the time to add visual interest and colour for adults as well as tykes as I presently find myself spending many hours a day and night sitting in there.

California

As our exterior renovations begin today (photos of the finished job in a few weeks), I'm thinking a lot about homes. I'm particularly smitten with this 'California modern' apartment on Etsy.

Matches

As non-smokers with a fireplace that isn't lined, our need for matches and a lighter are slim, but nonetheless having something on hand to light candles for a casual dinner in is something we enjoy. These literary matches fit the bill perfectly. For purchase at Dippy Lulu.

Scandinavia

One of our long-term plans is to spend a sabbatical in Norway (or Sweden or Denmark... we're flexible). Having only ever spent one weekend in Scandinavia (a cold and dark November weekend in Stockholm and Uppsala), I'm curious to experience more. My curiosity for the place melds with my love of all things modern and white (I know I'm on repeat here), and draws me towards the most fantastic Tumblr - From Scandinavia with Love. The eye candy is out of control.

P.S. Have I mentioned that we might take advantage of the sour, rainy weekend coming up by painting a large swath of our house white? I am so excited.

Future
